When children’s gender feelings and the way they express them, do not match the expectations of parents, guardians and teachers, this can give rise to anxiety in the adults. The may even show disapproval of these behaviours. Yet it is important for children’s mental health and wellbeing that their identity is respected so that they are able to express themselves in a way that feels right for them. All children have the right to be who they are.
These books will help parents, teachers and guardians to gain an informed, sensitive and supportive perspective on these issues, and to respond in safe, supportive ways, in the best interests of the individual child and the family, as well as the child’s friends and classmates.
