The Levy Review: What it is and why it matters

The NHS is reviewing adult gender services in England, led by Dr David Levy. This Levy Review will shape the future of gender-affirming healthcare for thousands of trans and non-binary adults.

The review is assessing how current NHS gender services are working, whether they meet the existing service specification, and what needs to change. A new draft specification is expected to follow, and there will be an opportunity for public consultation.

The Trans Healthcare Coalition has published a guide: The Levy Review: What is it and why does it matter?

This review could determine:
🔹 Who can be referred to gender services
🔹 What treatments and support are available
🔹 How hormones are prescribed and monitored
🔹 How clinics and GPs work together

We need a review that centres safety, dignity, and autonomy, not one that adds barriers.

The Trans Healthcare Coalition, of which GIRES is a member, is calling for:
✔ Shorter waiting times and consistent care
✔ Access to HRT without unnecessary barriers
✔ Inclusive services for non-binary, neurodivergent and disabled people
✔ Mental health support that’s offered, not required
✔ Fair access for those using NHS, private, or self-managed care
