Solent CAMHS Gender Identity Therapeutic Group

What is it?

This is a new group for young people aged 13-18 who are having difficulties associated with gender or sexual identity. It will take place at an adolescent service in Portswood, Southampton on a Thursday lunchtime from 12.30 – 2pm and members will be asked to attend every week during term time. This will be a mixed group and will run by a male and a female therapist. There will be anywhere between five and ten group members who will be able to stay in the group for up to 18 months depending on need.

Who is it for?

Young people who are having difficulties with: • Feeling you have been given the wrong gender or are ‘in the wrong body’. • Confusion about your gender and/or sexuality. • Feeling ok about your gender but wanting to sometimes dress as the other gender. • Difficulties with other people because of any of the above issues.

Aims of the group

• To provide a safe space to explore gender and sexuality issues and get help with any difficulties connected with these. • To help you and your family / support network accept and manage confusion or changes in relation to these issues. • To be open to alternative ways of thinking and being. • To build trusting relationships in the group where you can be both helpful to others and receive help from others. • To meet others in similar situations or with similar experiences and feel less isolated with these issues. • To look at various options for the future and some of the positive ways in which difficulties can be managed.

How can I join the group?

• We would like you to fill out the application form attached. You may want to discuss it with whoever has told you about the group or with a close friend or family member. You can then send the form back to:

P.O. Box 1401 Southampton SO18 9AD or

• When we get your completed form we will get in touch with you to arrange a time to meet. Filling out the form and then meeting with us does not mean you have to join the group but it will give you the chance to ask any questions you may have and then decide whether you want to take it any further.

• If you are involved with any other professionals we would not want for this group to replace that and we would want to keep in touch with them about your progress so that everybody is working together to support you as much as possible.

Thanks for reading all this and we look forward to hearing from you!
