Information

The Young Transgender Centre of Excellence is a project supporting young transgender people aged 0-18 and their families and carers in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

Excitingly, this is the first ever transgender project in our area to be funded by BBC Children in Need and we are proud and honoured to have been given the opportunity to run a flagship project of this kind.

Based here at the Leicester LGB&T Centre, this project began on the 2 November 2015 and will run for the next three years.

Information for the young transgender community

We offer a huge variety of services for young transgender people. These include a weekly social/support group called 'The T Party' for those aged 13-18. This runs every Monday 6pm-8pm here at the Centre.

We can also support you by referring you to the Tavistock and Portman gender identity clinic (GIC) in London. The only GIC to take patients under the age of 18.

If you want to drop-in and see Lisa we offer weekly drop-ins every Monday 4pm – 6pm and every Thursday 4pm – 6pm. You can also call or email Lisa and she will try her best to help you during these times.

We also offer advice and guidance, including on:

  •     binders, packing and breast formers
  •     deed poll and name changes
  •     medical procedures and surgery
  •     how and when to come out
  •     transphobia and hate crimes/incidents

Information for families and carers of young transgender people

We have seen first-hand that every parent/carer/family member of a young transgender person experiences different emotions and reacts differently to gender dysphoria. It is often a difficult time, not only for the young person but for their families too. It is for this reason that we also offer help and support to a young transgender person’s family.

We also offer advice and guidance on:

  •     how best to support your transgender family member
  •     binders, packing and breast formers
  •     deed poll and name changes
  •     medical procedures and surgery
  •     how and when to come out
  •     transphobia and hate crimes/incidents
