and Synopsis of the Etiology of Adult Transsexualism Last year, GIRES and the BCC Trans Group ran and funded a small symposium, with additional financial support from the King's Fund. The purpose was to gather together a team medical professionals and leading scientific experts in the field of gender identity disorder and transsexualism, including representatives from The Netherlands and America. The team also included trans people. The purpose of the group was to provide a forward-looking, coherent explanation of the etiology of the conditions, based on the most up-to-date scientific research evidence. The resultant 'Definition and Synopsis of the Etiology of Adult Gender Identity Disorder and Transsexualism' provides an alternative to the current classifications of psychiatric disorder and mental illness. This fresh approach will serve to inform the medical profession, thus improving clinical care; it will help to remove the prejudice which still often colours the treatment of trans men and trans women and it will reinforce the motivation for the changes in the law which are currently promised by the government.
