Conference on Medical Care for Gender Variant Teenagers

This conference has been approved for 6 units Continuing Professional Development

Hormonal treatment of transsexual teenagers is controversial. Whereas in the UK teens must experience most pubertal body changes before any medical intervention, usually at 16, in some countries, including the US, Canada, and the Netherlands, the earliest signs of puberty are blocked and then cross-sex hormones administered.

Clinical practices at medical centres in the US, Canada, and the Netherlands, with teen patients and parents describing their experiences, will be presented at Imperial College on Sunday, 28 September.

Clinicians presenting will be Professor Norman Spack, Harvard Medical School, Professor Marvin Belzer, University of Southern California Medical School, Professor Kenneth Zucker, University of Toronto, and Dr. Annelou de Vries, Free University, Amsterdam. All are engaged in extensive programs treating teen transsexuals with pubertal blockers and cross-sex steroids. Dr Simona Giordano, School of Law, Manchester University, will discuss ethical issues. Teens and parents from the Netherlands and the UK, the latter having travelled to the US for treatment, will discuss their experiences.

Professor Wylie Hembree, Columbia University, Chair of the Endocrine Society Task Force developing a Clinical Guideline for the Endocrine Treatment of Transsexual People (including adolescents) will deliver a report on the Task Force deliberations.

Richard Green is moderating the conference. From 1994-2006, he was Research Director/Head, Gender Identity Clinic, Charing Cross Hospital. He authored the chapter on child and adolescent gender identity disorder in the New Oxford Textbook of Psychiatry and has published 200 papers and chapters on psychosexual development since 1960.

The conference runs from 9:30–5 at Skempton Building, Lecture Theatre 201, Imperial College, South Kensington campus. We hope you can attend. To reserve a place, please send a check for £55, which includes lunch, payable to Richard Green, addressed to: Prof Richard Green, Imperial College at Charing Cross Hospital, Claybrook Centre, London W6 8LN.

1st October 2008

Gender identity disorder in adolescents

The Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) will hold a one day meeting for clinicians at its building in London: 1 Wimpole Street, W1G 0AE. Nearest underground station is Oxford Circus. Those who work with the trans support groups will be able to attend at the reduced fee of £125 for charity workers.

Registration is at 9.15 am and the meeting ends at 5.30 pm.

At present, the clinicians at the UK's sole treatment centre for gender variant adolescents refuse to offer medication to suspend the pubertal development that many of these young people find deeply distressing. Such medication is allowed in page 10 of the standards of care published by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health ( Standards of Care version 6 ). It is offered by the well respected treatment centres in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Norway, The Netherlands and the USA, see page 25 of the NHS publication: Medical care for gender variant children and young people: answering families' questions.

Most of the knowledge of treating these young people is in overseas centres and the UK's sole treatment centre has no experience in providing early suspension of puberty. Nonetheless, the planning committee for the meeting was drawn entirely from the UK. Moreover, only 2 of the 15 presenters at the meeting are from overseas. The RSM has provided a description of the aims of the meeting, the planning committee and the programme for the day.

If you wish to book a place, please go to here .

This free event is a part of The National Anti Bullying Week. It will be held on the evening of Wednesday, the 19th of November, 2008, at The Hackney Free and Parochial Church of England School in London.

LGBT History Month is a tool to support and promote all the equality strands. Under the new Single Equalities Bill, schools are likely to have to promote all seven equality strands.

The 19th of November will be a celebration of work done by teachers, youth workers and young people. It will be a chance to view exhibitions that have been made specifically for LGBT History Month from around the country and meet with other educators, youth workers, and people interested in the work.

The Pre-Launch puts LGBT History Month on the education calendar and makes the point that all schools - faith and secular - can celebrate the achievements of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans people, past and present, local and world-wide, famous and grassroots.

The Pre-Launch is being held in a school for the first time. The theme in 2009 is Education and Youth and Education Minister Baroness Morgan is the key speaker.

You will be treated to:

• A DVD of Students’s work
• Pupils’s performances
• Two teachers demonstrating how to do LGBT History Month in schools
• No Outsiders work in primary schools.
• How to celebrate LGBT History Month within a religious context
• An exhibition by the Proud Heritage Museum Project
• A display by Gay Birmingham Remembered
• A Nottingham Heritage timeline
• Lesbian Gay Christian Movement resources
• A GIRES stall, containing information on the medical care of gender variant young people and a toolkit to help schools combat transphobic bullying

You will be inspired, and will take inspiration and support from others. You will be resourced and ready to design and develop your own events in February 2009!

Refreshments will be available during the interval, as well as at the beginning and end of the evening.

The Pre-Launch begins at 6.30 pm and the doors will be open from 6. Further details will be available upon your reply.

At LGBT History Month you will find:

• A tool kit for schools to help them celebrate the month
• A calendar to put your events on and see what others are doing
• Resources to help schools design their own events
• A forum for schools and individuals to make links and share resources.

On the schools out website there is a tool kit for students to help them support their schools to be LGBT friendly. You will also find a host of other useful resources.

February 2009 marks the tenth anniversary of the Stephen Lawrence Report; we are proud to be a player in the work to challenge all forms of prejudice, stereotypes and discrimination.

February 2009 is the fifth year! Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trans History Month takes place every year in February. It celebrates the lives and achievements of the LGBT community. We are committed to celebrate its diversity and that of the society as a whole. We encourage everyone to see diversity and cultural pluralism as the positive forces that they are and endeavour to reflect this in all we do.

GFest - gayWise LGBT Arts Festival

GFest - gayWise LGBT Arts Festival takes place in November. Brochure available here. The Deputy Mayor, Richard Barnes, says in support of GFest:

“Now in its second year, GFest provides important opportunities for the capital's LGBT and queer-identified artists, performers and filmmakers – as well as others from across the globe - to showcase their work. It is fitting that GFest takes place in the capital. London has the largest, most diverse community in Europe, and already hosts a series of high-profile LGBT events, including Pride, the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival and LGBT History Month. The festival also encourages London's theatres and museums to review their programmes and make them more attractive to LGBT Londoners – this is important in a city where at least 10% of the population is gay and lesbian.”
