Promoting Trans Equality – the 7th Equality Strand
The Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) working in partnership with the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), the Forum for Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Equality in post-school education and with support from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (DBIS) have designed a series of trans-equality development workshops. These interactive workshops are designed to inform, develop and build individual and organisational learning and to give you the skills to effectively promote and mainstream trans-equality.
The workshops have been designed and will be delivered by colleagues and learners from the trans community in FE, with input from the Gender Identity Research and Education Society (GIRES) and Laura Miles from the UCU.
Practical, interactive and engaging, these workshops use the ‘lived experience’, presentations from colleagues and learners from the trans community, case studies and small group discussions to develop your understanding, build knowledge and the skills needed to meaningfully promote trans equality in your organisations.

New Scottish Hate Crimes Legislation
New legislation that will protect queer people in Scotland will pass into law next month, making Scotland the first country in Europe to
implement hate crime law which covers transphobic hate crime.
The Offences (Aggravation by Prejudice) (Scotland) Act 2009, also known as the hate crimes bill, will extend protection for victims of violent crime because of race or religion to cover sexuality, gender identity and disability.
It will mean that when someone does something that’s already a crime such as assault right through to murder and they were motivated by homophobic or transphobic reasons, sheriffs and judges will have to take this into account when sentencing.
The Equality Network is inviting people to the National LGBT Forum and Scottish Transgender Alliance Forum in Glasgow on March 20 to find out what exactly the changes will mean.
There will be contributions from Police forces across the country and victims of hate crime, discussions about how the law will be implemented and the best ways of ensuring gay people across Scotland know their rights.
Nearly one in four people in Scotland have been physcially assaulted because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Police forces, councils and organisations across Scotland are planning campaigns and events to co-incide with the new law.

Putting the T first - Photo Exhibition
On 10th May 2010 Jane Wrin will open a new Photo Exhibition, at the Brighton Media Centre, entitled ‘Putting the T first’. This is Brighton’s first photo exhibition focussing on the trans community.
Jane aims to raise awareness of the trans community; to show how many people’s pre-conceived ideas of transgender and transexuality is skewed by the hidden nature of many trans people and to reshape the way that people react to and think about the trans community.
Many, even those in the LGBT community not only put the T at the end, but they also discriminate and vilify them in a manner that gays and lesbians were treated no so long ago (and still are of course in many places). With a rise in Transphobia in 2009, this exhibition will form just one part of a movement towards change.
Jane is looking for models. If you identify as trans please email her for a chat. Shooting must end by 17th April and will take place during weekends in a central Brighton location, unless a group can be gathered for a specific location outside of Brighton.

LGBT Health Summit 2010
Emotional health & wellbeing is an issue for everyone, however for many LGBT people there can oftens be times in our lives when our emotional health & wellbeing suffers, having a significant impact on our physical health.
The LGBT Health Summit 2010 is a free event and this year will focus on how emotional health can impact on physical health and vice versa. They want to hear from as many people as possible from all across the UK sharing their ideas on how we can work together to improve services for LGBT people. They especially want to hear from LGBT people themselves who are interested in getting involved in the event, whether behind the scenes or up on stage!
Although the conference is free, we will be planning some evening entertainment on the first day with a cost attached but we will try to keep the costs down as much as possible to ensure you have a great experience and will release more details about this shortly as we start to finalise the programme.
The summit will take place in Hatfield, Hertfordshire on the University of Hertfordshire site.
